Robert Mark Hitch (1872-1940) was born in Morvan, Brooks County, Georgia. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercer University in 1892 and was admitted to the bar later that year. He moved to Savannah in 1893 and entered the law firm of Garrard, Meldrim and Newman. He established his own law firm in 1898.
